The website is new but perhaps in a few months we can start making a very early beta. It will take a long time to actually hire a proffesional dev. team? Can we just mess around with a few 3d props or even start building a very basic beta for the game. Also, what sortof programs would be great for 3-D design?

Yes, it will take a long time to hire a professional team, but there's still no reason to try to start programming the game in the interim: it would be very unlikely to amount to anything, and would just be a waste of effort that could be better spent elsewhere.

As for making some 3D props, though, by all means, that's pretty fun in of itself; I prefer 3DS Max myself, but it's got a hefty price tag; Blender is free and open source and is apparently quite good, although I've never used it myself.
