Cityscape Developer Acquired by NAVTEQ

Submitted by John on Wed, 12/01/2010 - 10:29

As a quick update to my previous story on procedural generation, PixelActive, the company that makes the 3D urban design / simulation program Cityscape, has been bought out by a firm called NAVTEQ. NAVTEQ is a subsidiary of Nokia, and focuses on location software like for use in things like car navigation systems and GPS devices. Clearly NAVTEQ is looking to move into 3D for its mapping software. The PixelActive site has now closed, and their demo is no longer available.

Personally, I'm sorry to see Cityscape disappear as an independent application. While not actually a game, the demo was a lot of fun to play around with and was a pretty intriguing showcase of the kind of things we might expect from a future city sim.

That is too bad but I prefer CityEngine even if it does not support animation.

CityEngine definitely has a much more robust procedural generation function than CityScape did; But I also found some of CityScape's other feature a little more intuitive. In any case it's a shame to see one less company working along these lines.

This a shame... I've used both packages and have to say that CityScape is by far the superior product. It's easy and it's clean. Unfortunately, CityEngine is the only game in town now, which is a shame... CityEngine is very difficult and fussy... more importantly, the assets it generates are not really game friendly.
