Monte Cristo shuts down

In a post over at Simtropolis, MC representative Gregory C. made official what a lot of us suspected was happening: Monte Cristo is facing bankruptcy and will shut its doors this week. While he indicated that the rights to Cities XL are being sold off to a publisher who will continue sales, it's likely that this will be the final nail in the coffin for CXL's further development.

The big question now for us and for the city sim genre is whether MC's failure will be a deterrent to any other commercial players trying to achieve something similar...

It is such a shame. I (Ilikeseattle) have been following this for some time.

It's a shame -- they took risks and pushed the envelopes. However, it is their just desserts with how they tried to rake their potential customer base over the coals.
